There are many reasons why authors write and create books. Most authors believe in their writing talents, others just let their creative juices flow, and after initially having one or two manuscripts published (not self-published) they normally expand their writing horizons.
The next step normally is employing a serious literary agent who believes in the output of their clients, an exceedingly difficult step.
After reaching the status of a published author, people sometimes ask the author to write a story or biography based upon that person's life, and that is why this book was created called; TO DANCE OR NOT TO DANCE! Which has now been republished by a fantastic Indian Publisher called, Pharos Books, New Delhi, India.
OK, but the title of this blog, a question, has still not been answered, and now the answer (or answers) will be divulged.
The main character, a classic Indian dancer, actor, a celeb, was originally supposed to be a non-fictional biography about his life. However, due to the lack of factual information provided by the real character, the author was forced into creating a fictional-biography BASED upon the real-life character (still with me?). Utilizing the real character's Indian background, the author proceeded in using his sparse knowledge of India, and roughly what makes India 'tick'.
For example: Cricket, diverse religious beliefs, discrimination against minorities, prejudices, rejection subjected to lower casts, hierarchical systems implemented by the British Raj, among many other aspects of Indian society today. Now using these typical, colloquial, idiosyncratic Indian traits, plus the author's fantasy, a novel was formed. The main, fictional character might be based upon a real character, but it is certainly not the real, Mr. Haleem Khan, a wonderful person, popular entertainer, actor, and best of all, a classical dancer who mainly performs dressed as a female. Haleem allowed the author to create the novel, his team even designed the cover to the book, but sadly due to many total misunderstandings; it is an Indian thing maybe, Haleem simply rejected the author's efforts, and offered no support whatsoever to the project, WHY?
Here the answer: Within the novel there is not one mention of the real Haleem's sexual orientation, and really the author has no interest at all in such things, they are private! In addition, the author, L.R.Johnson, avoided all references to anything sexual within the book. So, why did Haleem Khan totally misunderstand the meaning when a certain 'phobia' was part of the story? Ask him, I really do not know!
Moreover, L.R.Johnson, during the writing of the novel decided to use the fictional character, not the real one, for his own personal CRUSADE against all forms of discrimination, prejudice, racism, religious bigotry, parental pressure (rife in India), and sexual inequality. He managed to create a main character who, from childhood, up to adulthood, had to fight against everything mentioned above, and through all trials and tribulations, succeeded in creating an extraordinarily wonderful career entertaining thousands!!!
In fact, the fictional character is an Indian, Billy Elliot! (If you do not know, The Billy Elliot Saga, please Google him!) who also inspired the author! This book is now available all over the planet and the only priority behind the writing of this most fascinating novel is:
TO SUPPORT HIS PERSONAL CRUSADE IN THE FIGHT FOR EQUALITY FOR ALL LIVING THINGS!
Moreover, the 'fictional, main character' is the author's driving force, nothing more, nothing less!
Now you all know why the author, L.R.Johnson, wrote this novel!!
One day the 'real' Haleem Khan will understand! Hope is eternal!!
Les, after reading this explanation(?), my head spun. It must be a cultural thing or an uncovering of the mystique, that pushed him away. Probably hard for him to read, with so little depth, self inflicted. He didn't help and left you to your imagin. His story is a great one and so is your crusade. Your story made me crave more.
